Once we've cured the diseases
The President has announced an initial $100 Million investment of federal funds to jump start the comprehensive mapping and detailing of the human brain. The purpose; to understand the causes of the many debilitating diseases afflicting our aging and susceptible population.
Anyone who has watched the ravages of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's,and Lou Gehrig's disease, just to name some of the most known, applauds the effort, wishing it had begun 20 years ago, and hoping it moves swiftly to head off what we, or our loved ones, might be facing. It is usually, and accurately described as losing yourself, your life, bit by painful bit. Whatever can be accomplished to alleviate this suffering will, unquestionably, be a welcome advance.
Then the question becomes, "What else will we know?" When we uncover the secrets to the thoughts of men, where does that type of knowledge lead? Will this be the most prime example of the Road to Hell being paved with good intentions?
In addition to the research into the mechanics of the brain, I propose there begin funding and organizing to define the ethical guidelines needed to utilize and control the mysteries we are setting out to unravel.
This is no spleen initiative. No betterment of your lonely colon pledge drive. This is us, root cause analysis. We may not have time to talk it over later.
